Illinois submitting to legalizing recreational marijuana the legislation probably won’t come up for a vote until next year.
On Wednesday, sponsors introduced bills that will make it legal for adults 21 and older to possess, grow and buy a limited supply of marijuana.
The Illinois will license and control businesses to grow, process and sell cannabis. Marijuana and Cannabis extract products, and it would set up safety regulations such as testing and labeling requirements.
The law / bill would also allow residents to possess up to 28 grams of pot, or about an ounce, and to grow five plants.
The bills propose taxing cannabis marijuana at a rate of $50 per ounce wholesale, plus the state’s standard 6.25 percent sales tax.
Illinois would generate between $350 million to $700 million yearly of additional tax revenue. The projections are based on Colorado’s increased tax revenue.
